Doubling the Size of MediaCityUK - Submission

NJL Consulting is delighted to have worked on behalf of Peel Media Limited, a joint venture between Peel Land and Property Group and Legal and General Capital, to submit the applications for Phase 2 of MediaCityUK.  Phase 2 will double the size of MediaCityUK and represents a £1 billion investment in this location.  It will being forward c.1,800 apartments and 50,000 sq.m of offices with supporting retail, leisure, car parking and public realm.

MediaCityUK is a leading creative and digital hub that accommodates nationally significant institutions such as the BBC, ITV and Salford University along with 250 businesses, including many SMEs.  It is a significant contributor to the Regional economy and a nationally leading exemplar of urban regeneration. 

MediaCityUK was first delivered in line with an outline planning permission obtained in 2006.  It was triggered by the announcement that the BBC was relocating to Salford and an ambitious and successful development programme followed.  Phase 1 officially opened in March 2012 and there has been a continuous steady pace of development that has helped shape the sense of place that now exists.  Phase 2 will complete the vision for MediaCityUK, bringing forward a significant number of residential apartments to sit alongside the creative and digital hub.  It will create a complete community of businesses, residents, visitors and facilities, so that MediaCityUK will operate as a neighbourhood as well as a commercial and visitor destination.   

The Phase 2 development is the result of a detailed design review process and significant stakeholder engagement.  The project team has worked collaboratively with Salford City Council to realise the potential of this ambitious project.  This process has delivered a development of unique individual buildings, set within a high quality landscape.  The architectural team is led by Chapman Taylor as masterplan architects, with different innovative and creative architectural teams appointed to each plot.  The plots architects are Chapman Taylor, Sheppard Robson, Jeffrey Bell Architects, Hodder and Partners and 5plus, with Gillespies as landscape architect.

NJL is an integral part of the project team, providing strategic and detailed planning advice throughout the design process.  NJL set up a Planning Performance Agreement with Salford City Council which drove the planning process to a specific and tight timescale, including detailed pre-application engagement with the Council.  NJL co-ordinated the submission of the applications and the technical documentation that was submitted and prepared planning documents including a Planning and Delivery Statement, Technical Assessment Summary and an Executive Summary.  NJL will now work closely with Salford City Council through the determination of the applications.
