New Submission - Stockport Homes Headquarters, Edward Street

On behalf of Quorum Estates Ltd and Stockport Homes Ltd, NJL have submitted a planning application for an office development at Edward Street in Stockport town centre.  The application proposes the redevelopment of the car showroom and vacant industrial premises to form the new headquarters for Stockport Homes.

Stockport Homes act as a registered provider and also development partner to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC), managing social housing stock and facilitating the prevention of homelessness.  The organisation has almost doubled in size since its inception, which has put pressure on existing facilities, including their current head office which is now unfit for purpose.  The opportunity to relocate to the site at Edward Street will enable Stockport Homes to continue to provide an excellent and fundamental social service within an ideal central location.

NJL worked closely with the project team, SMBC and English Heritage over many months and the scheme has evolved following feedback received.  The car showroom is locally listed and is also located within a Conservation Area, and so justifying the loss of the building was critical to building the case for development.  Balanced against the loss of the building are the significant benefits associated with the scheme coming forward which include employment opportunities, the creation of a ‘Civic Quarter’ within Stockport Town Centre and the enhancement of the A6 Corridor.

NJL coordinated two stages of community consultation, prepared a Planning Statement and Sustainability Statement in-house and instructed and reviewed the other technical documents.

NJL will now liaise directly with SMBC and the relevant consultees through to determination of the application.
