NJL Shortlisted for Planning Award for Surf Snowdonia Project

The shortlist for the inaugural Planning Awards has been announced, and NJL Consulting have been nominated for the Planning for the Environment Award for their involvement in the Surf Snowdonia scheme.  Read the full article and check out the competition here.

The proposals for the UK’s first ‘Wavegarden’ inland surfing lake required an Environmental Statement, which NJL coordinated, along with extensive engagement with the Local Authority and key stakeholders.  The planning application was approved in June 2014 and the lake is set to open in the Summer of 2015.

Steve Davies, Managing Director at Conwy Adventure Leisure, said:

"The redevelopment of the former Aluminium factory site at Dolgarrog into the World’s first Wavegarden artificial surfing centre has been a project of monumental complexity.  The combination of a century’s worth of industrial contamination, an ecologically sensitive environment, a flood plain, shallow ground water levels, and the sensitivities of the local people who were still feeling the pain of the closure of the village’s principal source of employment, came together to present our company with a challenge of quite daunting proportions.  A significant number of consultants were assembled to assist in shaping our plans, but key to success has been the active nurturing of positive relationships at Welsh Government and local authority levels within a planning context.  The planning process required an especially imaginative and responsive approach, and NJL rose to the challenge supremely well.  They enjoyed a thorough understanding of the Conwy County Borough Council planning mechanisms, and most importantly nurtured powerful relationships with key staff.  Their advice to us was timely, and the quality of the material produced for us was highly customer focused.  As a consequence, this highly complex project cleared the key planning hurdles in comparatively quick succession – just over 18 months from project initiation – all involved have been astounded by this rate of progress.  NJL can therefore be very proud of their contribution to this literally unique project which will bring significant benefit to the local, regional and national economies."
